Who We are

We are the association Initiative Awareness e.V. Together we do not want to accept the current state of inequality, oppression, exclusion and the resulting forms of discrimination and violence. We want to intervene with an emancipatory stance as a practical approach from the feminist movement into the broader public and society, to be part of real change.

Our goal is to inform the public, intervene and break down power structures with an intersectional perspective. Discrimination- and power-sensitive spaces should be made accessible to minimize violence and establish a practice of solidarity. This means that we want to collaborate with civil society actors, political groups, NGOs, cultural creators, event organizers, and associations to fight together and support them in the implementation of awareness and anti-discrimination approaches in their practice.

Our goal is to develop strategies to minimize (sexualized) violence and all forms of discrimination at events and in organizational structures and to support those affected.

Our history

In summer of 2018 Leipzig-based awareness-experienced individuals from the events sector formed the association Initiative Awareness to pool and pass on their knowledge. The association is engaged from an intersectional perspective against sexualized violence and discrimination in event contexts and organizational structures. The initiative advises and supports groups, associations, and event sites in implementing awareness strategies, trains personnel and awareness teams on a supra-regional level, organizes further training, conferences, and nationwide networking days. The association also looks beyond the event context and develops ways in which the idea of awareness can be applied in other societal areas.

We work on awareness at events and in structures

Awareness is a specific practice that finds its way into the mainstream from feminist and emancipatory struggles — becoming increasingly visible as awareness teams at events. Besides awareness at events, we also see great potential in including awareness in group and organizational structures: For some time now we have also been working intensively on awareness in organizational structures: with information material, exchange rounds, networking, and educational and consulting formats.

Ida

she/her
Education coordination, workshop coordination, Train the Trainers
Ida enjoys dealing with what groups need to function well and sustainably together. Apart from awareness as an attitude, participation and hierarchy-critical spaces are also important to her.

Chris

he/him
Administration & finances
Chris has been part of the Initiative Awareness team since January 2026. He keeps track of finances, budgets and reports, ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Chris is particularly interested in collective working methods, feasible utopias, and how to build and shape structures so that they not only function but also become more just.

Luana

she/her
Team coordination
Luana has been part of Initiative Awareness since January 2024 and takes on the role of team coordination. She ensures stable structures and a supportive working environment so that the team can successfully implement the planned measures. For Luana, awareness means consciously perceiving social responsibility and creating sustainable change through collective action.

Luno

no pronouns
Project work, podcast
Luno has been with the team since 2025. They are most concerned with abolitionism and how a good life for everyone can be possible. Luno sees significant overlaps with awareness as a practical attitude, especially outside of events. Additionally, Luno deals with the field of "sex work and police violence" and community building. Recently, Luno has also become enthusiastic about somatic activism and learning and unlearning in the context of decolonial practice.

Pauline

she/her
Board
Pauline has been with Initiative Awareness since 2018. For her, awareness always means an intersectional perspective and continuous learning in the fight against discrimination and violence, and for establishing a solidarity and responsible coexistence. It is important for Pauline to break out of the bubble and also make an impact in public spaces. She sometimes finds it challenging to work with the term awareness.

Thimo

he/him
Board
Thimo lives in Berlin and has been organizing music, cultural, and political events since 2009. This is where his awareness of different forms of discrimination and violence developed. Through constant confrontation, mutual sensitization and educational work, the topic of discrimination-sensitive events became a heartfelt matter for him. Awareness and anti-discrimination work means primarily practical solidarity and the potential for change for him.
